The Wisconsin DNR is hiring an LTE Public Forestry Specialist located at one of our offices in either Madison, Rhinelander, or Tomahawk.

This dual LTE appointment is comprised of two 20-hour positions for an expected work schedule of 40 hours per week. The intention is to hire one candidate on both positions. See below for more information on the positions.

Position Summary
Position 1, Forester Advanced:

The purpose of this position is to assist in the statewide administration and coordination of State Forest, Department lands and National Forest operations including forest regeneration funding, forest certification, contract development and administration, data tracking and analysis and meeting management and logistics.

25% - Provide assistance with maintaining forest certification on all Department Lands, including annual forest certification audit

25% - Assist in the administration of the National Forest/Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) Timber Program, including contract development and administration, developing guidance and providing direction to field staff for GNA data collection and analysis, and supporting, as needed, GNA revenue projects.

20% - Administer and track special state forest funding including forest regeneration fund - organize and manage systems for receiving, reviewing and awarding applications, track project implementation and accomplishment reporting.

20% - Data management and analysis including compiling and tracking accomplishments and use of forest database programs (e.g. Wisconsin Field Inventory & Reporting System)

10% - Meeting management including planning meetings, drafting agendas, coordinating logistics and associated communication for Public Lands Team, State Forest Working Group, GNA Working Group and other meetings as necessary.



Position 2, Forestry Specialist:

Assist with the administration of Wisconsin's County Forest Program, ensuring 30 County Forests comply with Wisconsin state statutes including data base management, certification, grants/loans to the County forest program.


30% - Compile and maintain state land records dealing with inventory and timber sales. Become familiar with the Wisconsin Field Inventory and Reporting System (WisFIRS); maintain data and run reports as needed.


25% - Assist County Forest Specialist in day-to-day operations of the County Forest Program, such as Public Lands Specialist Team operations, handbook updates, maintenance of several public lands and timber sale forms, etc. Assist Public & Private Forestry Section Chief on special assignments.


25% - Coordinate the collection and reporting requirements for monthly County Forest time standards, biannual accomplishment reporting and Act 166 reports. Update historical County Forest accomplishments for all 30 counties.


15% - Assist County Forest Specialist with County Forest certification audit logistics and preparation of material. This will also include tracking and assisting counties with Corrective Action Requests and opportunities for improvement.


5% - Assist County Forest Specialist with new forester training and training associated with timber sales and the WisFIRS program.

Salary Information
$24.33 per hour

Job Details
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.
