Douglas County is currently seeking energetic and hard-working candidates to fill a Forestry and Parks Technician position. Ideal candidates will be energetic self-starters that are highly motivated, team players who have a positive, enthusiastic attitude and a love for the outdoors. Position will be responsible for assisting Department staff with land, forest, and recreational management of County Forest lands and County Park facilities. Additional responsibilities include building and grounds maintenance, equipment care and maintenance, and assisting with water control structure operation. 1. Assist in timber sale establishment.
2. Assist in timber sale administration.
3. Perform forest inventory data collection.
4. Assist in reforestation and forest improvement activities.
5. Assist in the development, general care, and maintenance of recreational facilities.
6. Serve as a lead worker over seasonal, part time, and/or temporary employees.
7. Assist in the development, general care, and maintenance of Department buildings and grounds.
8. Operate, care for, and maintain power tools and small engine equipment.
9. Assist in the operation, general care, and maintenance of Department vehicles and heavy-duty equipment.
10. Assist office staff with customer service.
11. Operate personal computer software.
12. Assist with managing dam operations.
13. Must be available by phone during off-hours, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
14. Attend trainings, seminars, annual meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings.
15. Assist with wildfire suppression and prescribed burn programs.
16. Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Associates degree or higher in Forestry, Parks/Recreation, Natural Resources, Facilities Management, or related field from an accredited University or College, and two or more years of related experience and/or training in land, forestry, recreational management, or facilities management -OR- equivalent combination of education and/or work experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform essential duties and responsibilities.

This is primarily a field-based position with additional work required within an office setting. The typical field-based setting requires frequent exposure to extreme and inclement weather conditions and often uneven, difficult terrain. Seasonal winter conditions often include ice, snow, and extreme cold. Seasonal summer conditions often include extreme heat, humidity, and exposure to biting insects.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform rigorous physical exertion for extended periods of time including, but not limited to, walking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, sitting, standing; and reaching, grasping, talking, hearing, and seeing. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and apply up to 500 pounds of force to push, pull or otherwise move objects. Specific physical abilities required by this job include using both hands for frequent fingering and grasping; vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions.

The employee will spend long hours in the field, outdoor recreational areas, and walking through natural forested terrain, frequently exposed to tree marking paint. At times, the incumbent must spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers. The employee must also have the physical ability, in all types of weather conditions, to operate four-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, and power tools. At times, the employee will be exposed to moderate to loud noise created by trucks and heavy equipment.

Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess a Wisconsin Commercial Pesticide Applicator License, or have the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment. Structured interview and background investigation required. Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
